On August 8, 2017, the Nevada Democratic Veterans and Military Families Caucus (Nevada Dem Vets) presented their 2nd Annual Johnathan Abbinett award to Congresswoman Dina Titus of Congressional District 1. The Abbinett Award is presented annually to an elected official who best promotes and supports the needs of Nevada’s Veterans. The Nevada Democratic Veterans and Military Families Caucus which was founded over 15 years ago, is the chartered Veterans Organization affiliated with the Clark County Democratic Party. Their mission is to promote the causes and needs of the over 300,000 Veterans and Military Families in Nevada.
They most often work in a bi-partisan manner to ensure Nevada Veterans are respected and their needs promoted politically. By working with other Veterans Organizations, the Nevada Dem Vets were able to achieve great successes such as; the new Veterans home in Northern Nevada, expansion of Veterans Treatment Courts, acceptance of military training at Nevada’s public colleges and universities, increasing the number of Veterans employed by the State of Nevada, and working to ensure that LGBTQ Veterans receive upgraded discharges.
Over the next few years, the Nevada Dem Vets will be working to improve how government works with Veterans such as; improving regulatory structures, working to ensure that more Veterans and employed and retained in law enforcement, as well as improved economic development opportunities within the Veterans Community.
Veterans and Military Families are the keys to making Nevada a stronger state as well as ensuring that Nevada remains a Veteran Friendly State.
