Carson City, Nev. – The Silver State Health Insurance Exchange (Exchange), Nevada’s state agency that helps individuals obtain affordable health coverage through the online marketplace, Nevada Health Link, enrolled 90,962 Nevadans during its fifth Open Enrollment season which ended on December 15.

“The Silver State Health Insurance Exchange has become a critically important agency in leading our state’s efforts to reduce our uninsured rate and providing the necessary resources to put Nevadans in direct contact with their health care options,” said Governor Brian Sandoval. “Given the shortened enrollment period and the federal uncertainty surrounding the healthcare marketplace, I am pleased the 2018 enrollment numbers have exceeded enrollment from 2017. I would like to thank the Exchange staff and its many partners for their exceptional efforts on an accelerated timeline.”

“We are really proud to have helped tens of thousands of Nevadans enroll in quality, affordable health coverage for 2018,” said Heather Korbulic, executive director of the Nevada Exchange.  “Despite the challenges of this year’s open enrollment period and the political rhetoric surrounding the Affordable Care Act, the Exchange saw firsthand how much our citizens want and need health coverage.  We are grateful for the continued support of our stakeholders who rallied behind our mission and worked with us to reach and enroll Nevadans. We are committed to meeting our consumers’ needs and will spend the coming months assessing the best ways to do that as we look ahead to Open Enrollment 2019.”

This year, Open Enrollment was November 1 through December 15, six weeks shorter than in years’ past.  Despite the shortened period, the Exchange’s robust marketing and outreach campaign generated week-over-week enrollment increases with a surge of 22,716 new and returning customers in the last week alone. As of Dec. 15, the total number of enrollments is at a record breaking 90,962 with 27,936 new enrollees and 63,026 returning customers. The Nevada Health Link’s state-run outreach and education efforts included 47 Navigators, three Broker Agency grantees, and over 100 participating brokers.

While Open Enrollment has ended, it is important to remember that certain changes in an individual’s life can make them eligible for a special enrollment period (SEP) and allow them to enroll at any time during the year. Examples of qualifying life events include loss of employer-based coverage, changes in income, and changes in your family size through marriage, divorce or the birth of a child. The Exchange was established per Nevada Revised Statues (NRS) in 2011 by the State of Nevada, and operations began in 2013, on the belief that all Nevadans deserve access to health insurance. Nevada Health Link, the state-based online marketplace, supported by healthcare.gov, allows Nevadans to shop for health insurance and provides federal tax credits and subsidies to help cover the cost of insurance for those who qualify.
