At the VFW Post 10047 late July 3rd, Nevada State Senator Pat Spearman and Nevada State Assemblywoman Brittney Miller for 2019 were presented the Nevada Democratic Veterans and Military Families Caucus’s (NDVMFC) Annual Johnathan Abbinett Award for their recognized support for veterans in the past years. The ceremony was filled with almost all of Nevada’s congressmen, congresswoman and senators (representatives of those attended in place those who were not present). At the podium were special guest speakers Congresswoman Susie Lee and Democratic Presidential Candidates; Senator Cory Booker and Congressman Seth Moulton. Mike Kelly, President of NDVMFC, MC’ed the ceremony and introduced the awardees and recognized all the senators and representatives in the hall. Congresswoman Susie Lee said, “2018 was a banner year for democrats in Nevada and I think all of us can look at each other and really pat each other on the back.” Senator Cory Book spoke about his dreams he wishes to achieve if he becomes President. Congressman Seth Moulton, a Marine Officer, said “I think the toughest question I ever got [from the Marines in my platoon] was a question I got a lot, and it was ‘Sir, why the hell are we risking our lives for this’; The answer today is the same as it was then, we’re fighting to uphold the values that our leaders have abandoned. We’re fighting for who we are.”
At the end of the ceremony the awardees came to the podium and said remarks. Nevada State Senator Pat Spearman said, “We managed to get Senate Bill 225 passed again with more money and more opportunity to help those women who are suffering from military sexual trolling”. All proceeds of the ceremony went to the NDVMFC.
