The Las Vegas Elks Lodge #1468 celebrated Christmas early this year with their annual Veterans’ Christmas in July event for our local homeless vets. The event this year was held on Saturday, July 13 at the Elks Lodge located at 4100 W. Charleston and saw as many as 120 local homeless vets attend. “We want to support our Veterans…this is our way of showing our respect to these men and women who have given us so much and asked for so little in return,” said Las Vegas Elks Trustee and spokesperson Robert Reed.
The veterans, many of whom were from the Las Vegas Veterans’ Village, were treated to a steak dinner with all the fixings prepared and served by Elk volunteers and with the assistance of Girl Scouts from Las Vegas Girl Scout Troop #77.
The vets were treated to more than just a great lunch. A highlight of the day’s event was the Parade of service branch flags accompanied by their corresponding branch anthems performed by the ladies of Las Vegas Emblem Club #114. The parade of flags always evokes a boisterous response from the various service members all still proud to cheer on their standard and salute our great U.S Flag.
In addition to food and camaraderie each attending vet was given a comfort kit of basic hygiene items and a custom dog tag and ball chain embossed with the Veterans’ Crisis Hotline contact number. Each vet was then directed to a vast collection of new and lightly used clothing, donated by members of the Las Vegas Elks lodge#1468 and the Las Vegas Emblem Club #114, to fill their arms with needed items of clothing.
The Elks pledge “So long as there are veterans, the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks will never forget them.” The Las Vegas Elks Lodge#1468 proudly supports this pledge.
