Starting from Nov 15th, VFW Post 10047 will now be sharing their Post Hall with Three Square for free dinners for seniors (ages 60 and over) every Thursday from 5pm to 8pm. Their first meal was on Nov 15th.

Three Square works with a service network of more than 1,600 community partners to reach struggling individuals and families at risk for hunger. We talked to Jodi Tyson, Vice President of Strategic Initiatives at Three Square Foodbank,

“The post is actually strategically located in (Zip code) 89115. In this area this is a food desert the Walmart up the street is closed, leaving a lot of people here without access to fresh and healthy food and we don’t have a lot of nonprofit agencies in this zip code in this neighborhood.

So people who live here who are seniors really go without they have extra barriers and challenges to getting healthy food. Because there’s not places to go to shop for them,

This organization has this great hall and this hall can be a place of social connection for people it can be a place to get healthy meals, it can be a place for seniors to take emergency food bags. So we really feel likes this post is just the best place to be the best resource and we’re just really happy that we can be here to help them fulfill their own mission to help older veterans and other seniors who live in this community”

“Every Thursday from 5pm until 8pm seniors can come and have a great meal and the best part is that many congregate meals that help seniors only allow the senior by themselves to come. And in this meal if you’re a senior who lives with other people who aren’t 60 you can bring them. So if you’re a grandparent who’s raising your grandkids, if you have multiple generations that are living in your house you can come and you can celebrate that meal with your whole family”

On Nov 15th, they fed about 100 people. Cleveland Clinic and Nevada Senior Services, Inc. held informational booths at the event.

Since this year Thanksgiving falls on a Thursday, Three Square provided meals to a hundred veterans, seniors and their families. Even People traveling from Spain and Washington came to check out the event.
